Sanjay Arora, a member of the Indian Police Service (IPS), was appointed as the city of Delhi's next police commissioner on Sunday by the federal government. He'll take over for Rakesh Asthana.

Mr. Arora, an IPS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre and a member of the 1998 batch, would leave his current position as Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on August 1 to join. According to the Union Home Ministry order, he may continue to work until his retirement on July 31, 2025, or until additional orders.

The source claims that Mr. Arora is just the third officer hired to lead the police force in the capital who is not a member of the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre. Prior to him, the position was held by Mr. Asthana (from the Gujarat cadre) and Ajay Raj Sharma (from the UP cadre).

Mr. Arora graduated from the Malviya National Institute of Technology in Jaipur with a bachelor's degree in electrical and electronics engineering.

The 57-year-old was a member of the special task squad of the Tamil Nadu Police that later pursued dacoit Veerappan. For it, he received the CM's Gallantry Medal.

Mr. Arora has served in the Border Security Force and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) (BSF). The source added that his inter-cadre deputation has been granted by the Union Home Ministry's police division in accordance with a formal order.
