Imran Khan, a former prime minister of Pakistan, attacked the army with harsh words on Thursday. He also called on the military establishment, or "neutrals," and warned that "history would judge them for what they did to the country."
Khan was cited by the local media site The Dawn as asking, "I want to ask the neutrals today, do you know where the country is heading?" Imran Khan, the leader of the PTI party, continued, "How can the country and economy advance when you don't even know what will happen in the next 2-3 months?"
Imran Khan came up with the name "neutrals" after the army pledged not to get involved in politics following his removal as prime minister in a no-confidence vote in April. “No matter how many times you call yourself neutral, history will blame you for what you did with the country,” he said, hinting at the army's lack of support for him during his removal.
The army should "examine their policies" while there is still time, the former Pakistani prime minister also advised. He was quoted by the local media as saying, "You should review and think that there are 220 million people in this country over 60% of the population is young, and they need work.
Additionally, the PTI chairman said that attempts were being made to remove him from office and split his party.
In response to Shahbaz Gill, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), being detained on sedition charges, Khan said the previous day that Pakistan is "descending into a Banana Republic." Additionally, he claimed that Gill's arrest was the result of a plot against him and all of his party's officials.
According to the local media outlet GeoNews, Imran Khan's personal aide Shehbaz Gill was detained last week in Islamabad for reportedly making divisive comments about the Pakistani army on a private TV channel. Charges of sedition and instigating members of state institutions against the Pakistan Army led to his final arrest.
