The election for the new party president will take place between August 21 and September 20 this year, as announced by Congress in October of last year.

Ashok Gehlot, a senior member of the Congress and the chief minister of Rajasthan, brushed off rumors that he could run for party president on Wednesday, saying he was "hearing this from the media." In anticipation of the announcement of the final election timetable for the Congress on September 21, interim president Sonia Gandhi met with Gehlot on Tuesday, causing speculation that Gehlot might be the front-runner to succeed Rahul Gandhi as leader of the historic party.

According to several media reports, Sonia Gandhi, who is hesitant to continue serving as interim chief due to health issues, on Tuesday urged Gehlot to take over.

"I have read about this in the media. About this, I know nothing. I'm performing the tasks that have been given to me, "On Wednesday, Ashok Gehlot said to reporters.

The working committee will meet virtually on Sunday to approve the timeline for the party president election, according to K C Venugopal, the Congress general secretary in charge of Organization. The CWC meeting will be presided over by Sonia Gandhi.

The CWC will hold a virtual meeting on August 28, 2022, at 3:30 PM to adopt the precise calendar of days for the election of the Congress President. The CWC meeting would be presided over by Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi, the Rajya Sabha member tweeted.

Prior to this, Gehlot stated that the party is "unanimously” in favor of Rahul Gandhi for the post.

"The nation's Congress workers will be disappointed if Rahul Gandhi is not elected party president. We shall endure while many people sit at home. Rahul Gandhi should embrace this position on his own, bearing in mind the feelings of the nation's average Congressperson "In Jaipur, Gehlot had spoken to journalists.

He continued, "We will keep up the pressure and persuade him to take over as the party chief.
